Purpose The purpose of this study is to present the interlinkages of psychobiography and autoethnography from an autoethnographical viewpoint. Design/methodology/approach This study is anchored in a qualitative narrative autoethnographical research approach, presenting one case vignette of an autoethnographical account dealing with a psychobiography of the writer Paulo Coelho. Findings Findings show how psychobiography and autoethnography are interlinked through the psychobiographical subject, the psychobiographer, their lives and life developments, their dreams, identity definitions and similarities in life themes. Research limitations/implications The study is limited to selected theoretical and methodological research frameworks and the case vignette. It reflects the autobiographical views on the psychobiographical subject researched. Practical implications The study provides guidelines for psychobiographical and autoethnographical researchers on self-reflection regarding psychobiographical subject choice and the positive psychological potential of both psychobiography and autoethnography. Social implications Psychobiography and autoethnography can be used as tools to increase mental health through (self-)reflection, the life of extraordinary individuals and the self. Originality/value This is a very valuable approach to explore psychobiography and autoethnography in combination. It contributes to the scarce literature in the area of research.
