Abstract: Studies have shown that individuals assigned male at birth with a first-degree relative diagnosed with breast cancer have approximately twice the risk of developing breast cancer. Advances in genomic science have revolutionized cancer care. However, many nurses and nursing students have received little formal education in genomic science. This foundational knowledge, including proper use of terminology, is critical to providing comprehensive and safe genomic care. Nurses also play a significant role in collecting family health histories and in identifying and educating males and their families on the benefits of germline biomarker testing. This article illustrates the role of genomic science in assessing risk and treating breast cancer in males, and its implications for nursing practice. Treatment may include a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, systemic therapies, and regimens with genomic-guided targeted agents.
