Argentinean pediatric patients with post infectious bronchiolitis obliterans exhibit more severe respiratory functional compromise compared to Israeli patients.
Abstract Background Post infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) is characterized as a chronic obstructive lung disease that follows a severe viral insult to the lower respiratory tract, mainly adenovirus in the first year of life, resulting in fibrosis and obstruction of the small airways of the lungs. The aim of the study is to compare clinical, functional and imaging characteristics of PIBO patients from Argentina and Israel. This is part of a multicenter project for the identification of the genetic basis of PIBO, supported by IDRC (Canada). Patients & Methods A descriptive analysis of records was conducted reviewing follow-ups of patients with confirmed diagnosis of PIBO (PIBO Score ≥ 7) using the Redcap database. This report included patients from Argentina and Israel. Results We included 30 PIBO patients from Argentina (2 centers) and 26 from Israel (1 center). The main results, expressed as mean (SD), are described in the table. Most of the Argentinean and Israeli patients has an Amerindian (79%), and Ashkenazi (62%) ancestry, respectively. Conclusions PIBO is a severe cause of chronic respiratory morbidity in pediatric populations exposed to severe viral infections in early life, being adenovirus the primary etiological agent. Argentinean PIBO patients has a more severe respiratory functional compromise than Israeli patients. This abstract is funded by: IDRC
Teper et al. (Fri,) conducted a observational in Post infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) (n=56). Argentinean cohort vs. Israeli cohort was evaluated on Clinical, functional and imaging characteristics. Argentinean pediatric patients with post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans (79% Amerindian ancestry) exhibited more severe respiratory functional compromise than Israeli patients (62% Ashkenazi).
