ABSTRACT Sheath rot, caused by Sarocladium oryzae , is an economically important fungal disease of rice. It has emerged as a potential threat in major rice‐growing areas of India. This review synthesises recent developments in understanding rice sheath rot with a focus on disease distribution, host pathogen interaction, yield losses, genetic diversity, population structure, virulence, epidemiology and host resistance. We critically evaluated current management of the disease, including agronomic practices (especially fertiliser applications), fungicide applications, biocontrol agents and use of resistant rice varieties. This work will provide a foundation for critically analysing research gaps and identifying priority areas that require immediate, in‐depth investigation to advance effective management of sheath rot. By integrating advanced research from genomics and precision breeding to microbiome engineering and digital surveillance, the agricultural community can develop a comprehensive and resilient framework for long‐term, cost‐effective, farmer‐friendly and environmentally sound management of rice sheath rot.
