Abstract Homeplace charging of electric vehicles is the dominant charging location in Europe, yet research on optimisation strategies to reduce charging costs remains fragmented. This narrative review provides a synthesis of the economics literature on smart charging at home to identify three key optimisation logics —market-driven, grid-conscious, prosumer-oriented— with distinct value dynamics. We propose a renewed research agenda offering researchers and policymakers a novel lens to evaluate smart charging strategies.
