• Model-updating framework estimates multi-layer material permittivity using a multi-antenna (receiver) radar system. • Information content from multi-receiver data is quantified based on entropy and degree of information (DoI). • The required number of receivers and their optimal placement locations can be identified based on information content. • Compared to uniform placement, optimal receiver placement significantly improves accuracy, reduces uncertainty, and mitigates the non-uniqueness of multilayer permittivity estimation.
