Biopsy site misidentification is a common and potentially serious error in dermatologic surgery that can result in wrong-site surgery and significant downstream consequences. Numerous strategies have been proposed in the literature to address this issue, involving collaborative efforts between patients and physicians. In recent years, technological advances have played an increasingly important role in improving the accuracy of biopsy site identification. Photography is the most commonly used and preferred method among dermatologists due to its wide accessibility and easy implementation. This literature review examines current methods used to minimize biopsy site misidentification before surgery, with a particular focus on ultraviolet-induced fluorescent dermoscopy (UVFD). This novel dermoscopy mode uses ultraviolet (UV) light to trigger fluorescence in the skin and enhance the visualization of specific structures. UVFD has emerged as an effective and affordable tool for biopsy site identification.
