ABSTRACT Diseases caused by various pathogens and cancer cell lines marks a global threat to mortality and morbidity Antibiotic therapy is the main stray of treatment against various diseases and infections, but the development of resistance in pathogens to these antibiotics imposes life‐threatening health issues and causes a major problem in drug development. Heterocycles have gained an interest of chemist community because of its potential pharmacological benefits. Coumarin (COM), belonging to a class of benzopyrones, exhibits various biological properties including antimicrobial, antiviral, anticancer, anti‐inflammatory and antidiabetic. The present work discusses different strategies and structure–activity relationships (SAR) by employing different catalysts under different conditions, for the synthesis of novel coumarin derivatives and evaluating their therapeutic activities as reported in the literature in the last half‐decade.
