Su Xuelin’s reception as a writer and historian of literature in 20th century China was characterized by many disruptions. Because of her harsh criticism of the canonical author Lu Xun, as well as her staunch anti-communism and her convinced Christian confession, she became persona non grata in mainland China for decades. By looking at her ongoing opposition to Lu Xun, the article shows which reasons – political, religious, and personal – have led to her being a contested writer even until today.
