Transboundary water resources aff ect the livelihoods, ecosystems, and sociocultural dynamics of the communities surrounding these resources. The Mekong River Basin spans several countries in East and Southeast Asia, serving as a crucial example of a region-wide water resource that has played a signifi cant historical role in feeding numerous cultures, economies, and societies.Nevertheless, concerns have been raised about the security of the basin's water resources due to the involvement of various actors in their management. This research examines ongoing water governance among the riparian states of the Mekong River Basin, focusing on the potential and challenges of regional cooperation along the Mekong River and its basin. The presence of new policy frameworks and projects by China, alongside the transforming environmental cycles in the Basin and the changing stances of the other riparian states, is another crucial aspect of this inquiry. The paper fi rst examines the environmental, economic, and sociocultural impacts of the shifting ecosystems of the Mekong River Basin subregion. The paper then focuses on the changing concept of security and the securitization of water and water resources
