Reviving Indian Knowledge Systems Under Nep 2020 : A Cost–benefit Perspective

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 presents a transformative vision for India's education system by integrating Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) with modern pedagogy to promote sustainable economic growth. Drawing from traditional sources like the Vedas, Upanishads, and Ayurveda, IKS emphasizes holistic approaches to health, environment, and innovation, fostering sectors such as wellness, agriculture, and traditional crafts. This integration can boost entrepreneurship, enhance skill development, and strengthen cultural confidence, contributing to job creation and economic expansion. It also encourages interdisciplinary learning, blending science with humanities, which helps students develop critical thinking and adaptability in a rapidly changing global economy. Additionally, the revival of indigenous knowledge can promote eco-friendly technologies and sustainable practices, aligning with global climate goals and enhancing India's competitiveness in green industries. However, challenges such as high implementation costs, need for curriculum reform, teacher training, and risks of ideological bias and quality control must be addressed. Despite these hurdles, the long-term benefits such as improved human capital, innovation, and sustainable development outweigh the costs, making NEP 2020 a strategic step toward positioning India as a knowledge-driven global economy.
