Abstract

This study classifies the Meaning Functions of the Modal particle ‘呢’ into five Categories: ‘Speaker-centered Information Presentation’, ‘unexpectedness’, ‘Politeness’, ‘Explanation’, and ‘uncertainty-based Conjecture’ and examines the Subjectivity associated with them. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, ‘呢’ performs the Function of‘ Speaker-centered Information Presentation’. This Function involves the Speaker highlighting and conveying Information that the listener needs to be aware of, based on the Speaker’s Subjective Judgment. In actual discourse, this Function tends to appear in Conjunction with other Meaning Functions rather than in isolation. Second, ‘呢’ demonstrates the Function of ‘unexpectedness’. This conveys emotions such as admiration, surprise, and reevaluation as the speaker confirms facts that defy Expectations, signifying a deviation from predicted results. Third, ‘呢’ serves a ‘politeness’ Function by creating a soft nuance. In many cases, it was confirmed that ‘呢’ reveals the Subjectivity of the Speaker’s Confirmation regarding the current state, thereby conveying a polite attitude toward the listener. Fourth, ‘呢’ Functions as an ‘Explanation’. In discourse, ‘呢’ is often used to remind the listener of, or to confirm, reasons related to Results presented in the preceding clause. In this context, the Speaker’s Subjective Intervention regarding the Proposition occurs, indicating a sense of Confirmation and Conviction. Finally, ‘呢’ indicates a Function of ‘uncertainty-based Conjecture’. The analysis reveals that ‘呢’ demonstrates an attitude of speculating within open Possibilities rather than making conclusive Judgments about uncertain Situations, thereby reflecting the Speaker’s Subjective attitude.
