Ceruminolith removal and otitis externa in a 2‐year‐old male neutered red kangaroo ( Osphranter rufus )

Abstract

Abstract A 2‐year‐old, male, neutered red kangaroo ( Osphranter rufus ) presented for a 9‐month history of right‐sided otic pruritus, ear droop and otitis externa with suspected ceruminolith formation. At initial presentation, computed tomography of the skull was performed, which revealed a non‐contrast‐enhancing mass effect in the ear canal. Following computed tomography, a video otoscope‐guided procedure enabled the removal of a large ceruminolith and the visualisation of an intact right tympanic membrane. Ear cytology collected during the procedure had approximately five cocci per high‐power field in the right ear and approximately 10 Malassezia per high‐power field in the left ear. Compounded dexamethasone, enrofloxacin and miconazole ear drops were applied daily for 1 month, with significant improvement in ear carriage and comfort. Ear drops were continued for 2 more months at a twice‐weekly frequency. The patient had near‐normal ear carriage without ear flicking for 1 year after ceruminolith removal.
