This research examines the role of interfaith marriage in fostering Muslim and Christian coexistence in South Wollo, Ethiopia, an area historically renowned for religious plurality and tolerance. Using a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design, the study triangulated views from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions between interfaith couples and religious community members, supported by survey respondents. The research uncovers how interfaith marriages foster social integration, reduce prejudice, and encourage cultural exchange. Findings reveal that 66.7% (See Table 4) of participants perceive interfaith marriage as a positive force for social cohesion. Couples and families involved in an interfaith marriage often experience a strong kinship tie, encourage mutual respect, and share traditions, which help as a crucial method for Christian–Muslim harmony. However, over 82% (see Table 3) of respondents face rejection from their families, struggle with decisions about raising children, and encounter pressure from religious communities concerned about preserving doctrinal purity. Despite the challenge, interfaith marriage stands as a powerful symbol of unity and resilience, demonstrating that shared values can transcend religious boundaries and foster a more inclusive society in the study area. To strengthen the role of interfaith marriages in Christian–Muslim coexistence, community leaders should foster dialogue that respects both faiths.
