Abstract

The article examines legal consciousness as a distinct form of social consciousness that guides individuals and social groups within the legal reality and contributes to the stability of legal order and the rule of law. Based on an overview of Russian legal scholarship, it is shown that no uniform definition or set of characteristics has been established, due to shifting values and the transformation of legal life. Legal consciousness is substantiated as an integrated system of legal knowledge, evaluative judgments, attitudes, and value orientations, correlated with moral, religious, and political forms of consciousness; particular emphasis is placed on its axiological dimension and the recognition of fundamental rights and freedoms. A classification is proposed according to the depth of reflection of legal reality and the completeness of information: everyday (empirical), scholarly (theoretical), and professional (the legal consciousness of practitioners). Their functions within the mechanism of legal regulation are discussed, including cognitive, evaluative, predictive, and regulatory functions. The study underscores the impact of professional legal consciousness on law-application practice and legal culture, and the need to align social expectations with legal norms.
