Key Points

  • The research aims to evaluate how the frequency of whole-blood donation affects donor health.
  • Conducted a systematic review of current evidence on blood donation frequency and health outcomes.
  • Analyzed adherence to WHO guidelines regarding inter-donation intervals for men and women.
  • Considered existing studies and recommendations for safe blood donation practices.
  • Current WHO guidelines suggest a minimum of 12 weeks between donations for men and 16 weeks for women.
  • Recommendations are made due to a lack of robust evidence from high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • Further research is necessary to determine the long-term health effects of donation frequency.

Abstract

In the absence of more robust evidence and pending future high-quality RCTs, it is prudent to adhere to the current WHO guidelines on minimum inter-donation intervals for whole-blood donation, that is, 12 weeks for men and 16 weeks for women, as a precautionary measure.
