Key Points

  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension is prevalent among asphyxiated neonates, indicating a serious health issue.
  • Asphyxia was identified as the most significant predictor for developing persistent pulmonary hypertension.
  • The study recommends echocardiography and sildenafil for diagnosing and treating persistent pulmonary hypertension in affected neonates.
  • Routine monitoring and swift intervention are crucial for managing this condition in neonatal care settings.

Abstract

Severe asphyxia was the single most significant predictor of the development of PPHN among asphyxiated neonates. The prevalence of PPHN among asphyxiated neonates was high. A high index of suspicion and the routine use of echocardiography and sildenafil to diagnose and treat PPHN in asphyxiated neonates are recommended.
