Abstract

The De Cicco Method is a clinical approach for functional optimization of residual vision in low vision patients through identification of the Preferred Retinal Locus (PRL) and controlled prismatic image displacement. The method combines functional visual field assessment, perceptual evaluation, clinical observation of fixation behavior, and progressive prism rotation to identify the retinal region providing the best visual perception. Once the functional PRL is identified, optical prisms are used to redirect the image toward this retinal area in order to improve visual stability and functional vision. The objective of the method is not to treat the underlying retinal pathology but to optimize the use of residual visual function and facilitate visual adaptation. This document describes the conceptual and clinical foundation of the De Cicco Method based on clinical observation in patients with low vision conditions.
