Abstract

The impact of a liquid jet hitting a flat elastic plate is investigated in the paper. The fluid is assumed to be irrotational and invisid. The flow potential is described by continuous wave equation with consideration of the compressibility of the fluid and the elasticity of the plate. The wave equation governing the motion of the flow is approximated by a doubly asymptotic method which transforms the differential equation into an integral form. The free surface of the liquid jet satisfies the nonlinear kinematic and dynamic boundary conditions. The influence of compressibility of the jet on the impact pressure at the initial stage is studied. Satisfactory agreements are found through the comparison of the present results and previous analytical results. The influence of boundary conditions and geometry of the jet on the numerical results has also been analyzed in this paper.
