Abstract

ABSTRACT A fundamental objective in the global effort to combat climate change is to achieve global decarbonization by implementing innovative technologies that reduce carbon footprints and promote the adoption of renewable energy. A highly promising way to achieve this goal is to adopt green hydrogen, a clean and sustainable energy solution produced by water splitting via electrolysis. On that account, reliable, affordable, and highly efficient electrocatalysts are critical for the widespread adoption of these technologies, and BaTiO 3 ‐based electrocatalysts stand out as promising candidates. This review provides a comprehensive and in‐depth exploration of fundamental aspects and advantages behind the rising interest in BaTiO 3 ‐based materials as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), focusing on their unique ferroelectric features, electronic configurations, and surface chemistry. Notably, these materials demonstrated their promising electrocatalytic performance and stability in alkaline medium, whereas their applications in acidic and neutral media remain limited. Additionally, it emphasizes strategies to improve the electrocatalytic performance of perovskite oxides, with particular focus on recent experimental and theoretical advances in BaTiO 3 ‐based electrocatalysts. Finally, future challenges and prospects in designing active and durable electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting electrolysis will also be discussed.
