Key Points

  • To explore the psychotherapy experiences of patients with functional neurological symptom disorder (FNSD) beyond symptom reduction.
  • Conducted qualitative interviews with patients receiving psychotherapy for FNSD.
  • Analyzed experiences related to symptom improvement and changes in self-awareness.
  • Investigated how patients interpret their psychotherapy experiences.
  • Patients reported improvement in symptoms alongside increased self-awareness.
  • Participants described re-engagement in daily life as a significant outcome.
  • Factors attributing to therapeutic change included shifts in understanding experiences.

Abstract

Psychotherapy experiences in FNSD are not limited to symptom reduction. Alongside improvement, multidimensional experiences such as increased self-awareness, changes in how they understand and interpret their experiences, and re-engagement in daily life were also reported. These findings provide clinically meaningful insights into how therapeutic change is experienced within psychotherapy for FNSD and the factors to which this change is attributed by patients.
