Key Points

  • The study aims to develop a synthetic method for delivering drugs to the back of the eye, addressing current delivery challenges.
  • Developed functionalized solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) as a drug delivery system.
  • Mimicked a natural mechanism to open eye protective junctions.
  • Evaluated the efficacy of SLNs in targeting retinoblastoma.
  • Synthetic SLNs successfully open protective eye junctions more effectively than animal-derived particles.
  • High precision in targeting retinoblastoma with minimal side effects.
  • Reduced risk of immune rejection and enabled mass production of the drug delivery system.

Abstract

This research presents a new method for delivering life-saving medication to the back of the human eye without the use of painful and risky needles . While recent breakthroughs have used animal-derived particles to bypass the eye's natural barriers, this paper proposes a fully synthetic, laboratory-made alternative: Functionalized Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLNs). By mimicking a natural "lockpick" mechanism found in biology, this system can safely and temporarily open the eye's protective junctions to target childhood eye cancer (retinoblastoma) with high precision . This synthetic transition solves the major issues of immune rejection and mass production, paving the way for painless eye drops to treat chronic and deep ocular diseases
