Key Points

  • The aim is to develop effective flood control strategies in the Godavari Basin using GIS and hydrological data analysis.
  • Analyzed runoff/discharge data from 1996 to 2025 for flood frequency and vulnerability mapping.
  • Applied watershed delineation and multi-criteria analysis to identify high-risk zones.
  • Utilized satellite data for mapping and assessing hydrological parameters.
  • Identified high-risk flood zones in Eluru, East and West Godavari, and Kona Seema districts.
  • Enhanced flood preparedness through real-time monitoring of rainfall, runoff, and inundation.
  • Proposed strategies including embankments and reservoirs for sustainable water management.

Abstract

Abstract This ArcGIS 10.2-based study analyzes 1996–2025 Godavari River runoff/discharge data to create GIS/remote sensing flood control strategies for Andhra Pradesh. Addressing sedimentation, excess runoff, erosion, and human impacts, it applies flood frequency analysis, watershed delineation, reservoirs, recharge, and embankments—evaluating hydrological parameters via satellite vulnerability mapping (IRS P6 LISS-III, SRTM-DEM). Multi-criteria analysis zones high-risk areas like Eluru, East/West Godavari, and Kona Seema districts; NRSC/ArcGIS data flags cropland deltas for alerts. It enhances preparedness (real-time rainfall/runoff/inundation monitoring), resistance (embankments/vegetation vs. erosion), and long-term recovery (recharge/reservoirs for sustainable water in a changing climate). Keywords: Godavari River basin, Geospatial technology, sedimentation, mitigate flood.
