Designing Multi-Faith spaces: A delicate balance between the positive and the negative

This paper examines the design of multi-faith spaces (MFS) within airports across the Global North, exploring the key elements required to create inclusive and meaningful environments for diverse religious practices. Drawing on the historical development, purpose, and evolving design approaches of multi-faith spaces, this paper investigates how architects and designers consider neutrality and religious representation, privacy and openness, and symbolism and inclusivity. By analysing these factors, this paper identifies core design principles that contribute to the effectiveness of multi-faith airport prayer rooms, offering insight into how shared sacred environments can be thoughtfully realised.
