Key Points

  • Gandhi's political philosophy emphasizes truth and non-violence as guiding principles in governance.
  • Contemporary politics increasingly prioritizes power acquisition over ethical considerations and public welfare.
  • Gandhi proposed village self-rule and decentralization to foster genuine leadership and moral accountability.
  • Modern political systems often succumb to corruption, casteism, and communalism, undermining democratic values.

Abstract

Mahatma Gandhi was not merely a political leader of the Indian freedom struggle, but a visionary thinker who integrated politics with ethics, service, and inner strength. According to Gandhi, the purpose of politics is not merely to attain power, but to guide society based on the principles of truth, non-violence, and moral values. His political philosophy was deeply rooted in the foundational principles of Satya (Truth) and Ahimsa (Non-violence). Gandhi viewed politics as a means of service, sacrifice, and public welfare, and proposed concepts like Gram Swaraj (village self-rule), decentralization, Swadeshi (self-reliance), and ethical leadership. He believed that politics and morality are inseparable, and that politics devoid of ethics degenerates into a mere pursuit of power, with potentially destructive consequences for society and the nation. In contrast, contemporary politics has transformed into a commercialized, opportunistic, and power-centric structure. Ideological commitment has become secondary, while elements like casteism, communalism, personal gain, defection, and corruption have become increasingly dominant. The primary objective of today’s politics seems to be the acquisition and retention of power, pushing public interest, policy-making, and moral accountability to the margins. Abstract in Hindi Language:
