Key Points

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of HIV self-testing (HIVST) and coupon distribution in increasing demand for combination HIV prevention services among MSM and transgender women.
  • Conducted a randomized clinical trial within the ImPrEP project framework
  • Engaged peers who use PrEP to distribute HIV self-testing kits and coupons
  • Measured recruitment and linkage to HIV prevention services among participants
  • HIV self-testing and coupon distribution successfully recruited MSM and transgender women
  • Peer engagement enhanced demand for combination HIV prevention services
  • Effective linkage across the HIV prevention cascade was observed

Abstract

Both HIVST and coupons were successful in recruiting MSM and transgender women for combination HIV prevention services. Peer engagement of persons using PrEP can contribute to demand creation and strengthen linkage across the HIV prevention cascade.
