Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive historical analysis of high-performance orbital vehicles, focusing on reusable spaceplanes from conceptual designs to operational systems across German, US, Soviet/Russian, European, British, Japanese, Chinese, and commercial programs. The study encompasses both human-piloted and autonomous vehicles, examining suborbital experiments leading to orbital spaceplanes while excluding launch vehicles, capsule-based systems and gliders. Based on current USSF autonomous orbital vehicle experiments and international developments, this paper identifies key trends and proposes future structural developments for cargo and orbital operations vehicles. Analysis reveals focus areas in advanced materials, hybrid propulsion, enhanced autonomy, modular payloads, and innovative structural configurations for unprecedented persistence, flexibility, and survivability. This research addresses critical aspects of thermal protection systems, hypersonic aerodynamics, composite structures, autonomous GNC, and orbital maneuvering systems relevant to civil and defense applications.
