Key Points

  • This study aims to investigate the link between short-acting beta-agonist prescriptions and exacerbation rates in COPD patients on triple inhaler therapy.
  • Retrospective cohort design
  • Analysis of SABA prescriptions alongside exacerbation rates
  • Assessment via antibiotic prescription records
  • SABA prescriptions were frequently observed despite triple inhaler therapy
  • A positive correlation was found between SABA use and increased number of exacerbations
  • Excessive SABA prescriptions suggest inadequate control of COPD symptoms

Abstract

A significant number of subjects were prescribed SABA despite SITT therapy. A relationship between SABA packages and the number of exacerbations, assessed by OC/antibiotic prescriptions, was observed. Excessive SABA use or prescription may indicate frequent exacerbations in patients with COPD despite receiving maximal inhaled therapy.
