ABSTRACT The reaction of the polyamine cage compound HBIW 1 continues to supply surprising, novel molecular skeletons when reacted with acylating agents. The reaction with phenyl isocyanate under forcing conditions yielded a known rearranged material 2, its corresponding addition product 3, and a novel spiro polyaza material 4, which is probably a product of further reaction of 3. These products are the result of a variety of push–pull cleavages and reconnections driven by strain relief through the N–C–N motif in HBIW.
