MAMartínez Ramos Beatriz AlejandraGGGonzález Crispin Cristian Geovani

Key Result

Family functionality and perceived social support were significantly associated with adherence to antihypertensive treatment in geriatric patients.

Key Points

  • To examine the relationship between family functionality and adherence to treatment in geriatric patients with arterial hypertension.
  • Conducted a cross-sectional observational study in 300 patients over 60 years of age.
  • Assessed family functionality using the family APGAR tool.
  • Measured therapeutic adherence using the Morisky-Green test.
  • Evaluated perceived social support with the MOS questionnaire.
  • Performed statistical analysis using GraphPad Prism v.8, applying descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Found a significant association between family functionality and adherence to treatment.
  • Reported that higher family functionality correlates with better therapeutic adherence.
  • Identified sociodemographic factors influencing family dynamics and treatment outcomes.

Structured PICO

Does family functionality and perceived social support improve adherence to antihypertensive treatment in geriatric patients with arterial hypertension?

P
Population
300 older adults (mean age 68 years, 65% female) with systemic arterial hypertension treated at a primary care unit in Mexico.
E
Exposure
Family functionality (assessed by family APGAR) and perceived social support (assessed by MOS questionnaire)
O
Outcome
Therapeutic adherence to antihypertensive treatment, measured by the Morisky-Green testpatient reported

Family functionality, perceived social support, and employment status are positively associated with adherence to antihypertensive treatment in geriatric patients.

Main Result

p-value: p=0.0298

Limitations

  • Cross-sectional design prevents establishing causal relationships between the variables analyzed.
  • Use of self-administered instruments may be subject to social desirability biases.
  • The sample does not allow the results to be generalized to other regions of the country with different sociodemographic characteristics.

Abstract

A cross-sectional, analytical, and observational study was conducted in 300 patients over 60 years of age at the Family Medicine Unit No. 1 in Orizaba, Veracruz, Mexico. The family APGAR was applied to assess functionality, the Morisky-Green test to measure therapeutic adherence and the MOS questionnaire to assess perceived social support. Sociodemographic variables and family typology were included. The statistical analysis was performed using the GraphPad Prism v.8 program, using descriptive and inferential statistics using X2 test (p < 0.05).
