Rainbow Symbolism and the Unity of the Flood Narrative: A Critical Response to Psychological and Symbolic Interpretations of the Deluge Tradition

This research presents a cross-cultural comparative study of flood narratives, focusing on the persistent symbolism of the rainbow across diverse traditions. The article critically examines psychological and symbolic interpretations of the flood, such as Jungian archetypes and structuralist readings, and argues that the consistent role of the rainbow as a covenantal or restorative sign supports the hypothesis of a single original narrative. The study analyzes sources from Abrahamic, Pacific, Aboriginal Australian, Papuan, Masai, and Chinese myths, demonstrating that, despite historical, linguistic, geographic, and cultural independence, the rainbow consistently signals the end of the flood and the promise of renewal.
