At the request of the English Heritage Trust, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and earth resistance surveys were conducted at Pickering Castle, Pickering, North Yorkshire, to improve the understanding of predetermined areas of interest within the castle (the Inner Bailey, Outer Bailey and Motte/Shell Keep). The purpose of the survey was to inform the interpretation and reconstruction drawings being produced for an updated edition of the visitor guidebook. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and earth resistance surveys were conducted across accessible areas of Pickering Castle, Pickering, North Yorkshire, in response to a request from the English Heritage Trust. The surveys were designed to improve the understanding and interpretation of areas of interest within the castle including the Inner and Outer Baileys and the Shell Keep/motte areas. The survey results suggest the presence of buried walls, and areas of masonry or rubble deposits that may be related to former structures primarily located close to the curtain walls in both baileys, along with evidence for pipes or culverts and other possible water management features. Anomalies associated with the former tennis courts, modern paths and the current Ticket Office have also been identified.
