Key Points

  • This work aims to explore the historical origins and prototypes that led to the development of the connectionist system model.
  • Reviewed historical literature on cellular automata and artificial neural networks.
  • Analyzed discrepancies in concepts related to finite automata and distributed parallel computing.
  • Discussed the roles of parameters versus state variables in system models.
  • Identified the foundational ideas that influenced the development of the C-system model.
  • Revealed differences in the understanding of connector concepts within automata.
  • Explored the potential for duplex links, enhancing connectivity models.

Abstract

The synthesis of cellular automata and artificial neural networks (ANN) in the form of a connectionist system (C-system) model is proposed. The issues of standardization in science are discussed. The general historical origins and discrepancies of genus specific ideas for finite automata, ANN, cellular automata, and distributed parallel computing are shown. The focus is on the concept of a connector, the difference between a parameter and a state variable, and the possibility of duplex link instead of unidirectional. Three-phase operation of the oscillator element.
