Abstract

Smart waste management is an essential requirement for maintaining hygiene in modern society. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Smart Dustbin using an Ultrasonic Sensor and Arduino microcontroller. The system is designed to automatically open and close the dustbin lid when an object or human hand is detected within a predefined distance. This touchless operation helps in reducing human contact with waste and minimizes the spread of germs and bacteria. The proposed system consists of an ultrasonic sensor for distance measurement, an Arduino Uno for control and processing, and a servo motor for lid movement. The system operates with low power consumption and provides quick response, making it suitable for real-time applications. Experimental results show that the smart dustbin operates efficiently and reliably in various conditions. The developed system is cost-effective, easy to implement, and suitable for use in homes, hospitals, offices, and public places. This project demonstrates the application of embedded systems and automation technology in improving solid waste management and promoting cleanliness and hygiene.
