Key Points

  • The aim is to identify effective edutainment design principles and teaching methods in Malaysian higher education.
  • Conduct a systematic literature review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines.
  • Use the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) 2018 for quality appraisal.
  • Focus on project-based learning strategies for training game designers.
  • The proposed Designer-Centered Edutainment Framework (D-CEF) addresses training gaps.
  • Identification of effective pedagogical approaches for game design in resource-constrained settings.

Abstract

This registered protocol outlines methods for systematic literature review synthesising (1) validated edutainment design principles in Malaysian higher education contexts and (2) pedagogical approaches for teaching new game designers through project-based learning (PBL). The review addresses a critical gap between game application (learner outcomes) and designer training, proposing the Designer-Centered Edutainment Framework (D-CEF) for sustainable edutainment ecosystems in resource-constrained settings. Methods follow PRISMA 2020 guidelines with quality appraisal via Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) 2018. Target journals: Computers & Education, International Journal of Game-Based Learning
