Key Points

  • To evaluate the impact of different bruxism classifications on pain, mental health, and sleep quality.
  • Analyzed bruxism types: sleep bruxism (SB), awake bruxism (AB), and combined AB/SB.
  • Compared associations of bruxism types with temporomandibular joint pain, depression, anxiety, stress, and sleep quality.
  • Conducted statistical analyses to determine prevalence and associations.
  • Combined bruxism classification showed higher prevalence rates than AB or SB alone.
  • Stronger associations were found between combined bruxism and negative mental health outcomes.
  • Identified significant links between bruxism types and sleep quality issues.

Abstract

The new combined AB/SB bruxism classification has shown to have higher prevalences and stronger associations with most of the variables analyzed in this study as compared to AB or SB separately; therefore, future studies and consensus statements must include this new bruxism classification.
