Simplicity Above Elegance: Another Look at the Asymptotically Correct Standardization of Snijders

SSSandip Sinharay

Key Points

  • The paper aims to provide a simpler derivation of the asymptotic standardization for person-fit statistics.
  • Derives an alternative approach for standardization of person-fit statistics.
  • Analyzes previous findings on simulation outcomes by Snijders and others.
  • Compares the alternative formulation to Snijders' original method.
  • The new derivation offers a simpler formula for calculating person-fit statistics.
  • The alternative method clarifies the explanation of several person-fit statistics.
  • Highlights advantages over the existing standards, indicating improved usability.

Abstract

Person-fit statistics are widely used to detect aberrant response patterns in educational and psychological measurement. Snijders suggested an asymptotically correct standardization for a broad class of such statistics. This paper presents an alternative derivation of this standardization. The derivation yields several advantages including a simpler formula and simpler description of several person-fit statistics including the l z * statistic and a theoretical explanation of simulation findings reported by Snijders and van Krimpen-Stoop and Meijer, among others.
