Learning outcomes The learning outcomes are as follows: to understand the market entry challenges for EV adoption in Pakistan, covering economic, infrastructural and consumer behavior factors, using real-world industry data (Understanding); to analyze factors influencing Pakistani consumers’ shift to EVs and compare cost-benefit tradeoffs with gasoline vehicles (Analyze); to assess sustainability-driven strategies for PakVolt by linking business decisions to specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) relevant to the EV industry (Evaluation); to design actionable strategies to accelerate EV adoption in Pakistan by applying appropriate academic theories, such as the Technology Adoption Lifecycle (TAL) theory (Creation); and formulate a justified launch decision and phased rollout roadmap using the PESTLE framework, balancing market potential, regulatory risks and infrastructure readiness (Create). Case overview/synopsis This case study explores the strategic challenges and opportunities faced by PakVolt, a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) company in Pakistan, as it navigates the complexities of launching its EV lineup in an uncertain market. With the global shift toward sustainability and the increasing demand for green transportation solutions, PakVolt aims to position itself as a key player in the country’s evolving automotive industry. However, the company faces significant barriers, including inadequate infrastructure, regulatory constraints, economic feasibility concerns and consumer adoption challenges. Using frameworks such as PESTLE analysis, Porter five forces, Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation Theory and the Cost Benefit Analysis, the case evaluates the risks and strategic decisions necessary for PakVolt’s market entry. It also examines consumer behavior and the cost trade-offs between EVs and traditional gasoline vehicles, shedding light on the factors influencing adoption rates. The case encourages students to analyze the business environment, assess market conditions and develop strategic recommendations for PakVolt’s leadership. It also aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), offering a real-world perspective on sustainability-driven business models.
