Key Points

  • The study aims to assess the impact of urine tenofovir feedback on PrEP adherence among young men who have sex with men (MSM).
  • Conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT)
  • Implemented remote, motivational interviewing-informed intervention
  • Used self-administered point-of-care urine testing for tenofovir levels
  • Participants increased hair tenofovir levels corresponding to one to two tablets weekly
  • Demonstrated high feasibility and acceptability of the intervention

Abstract

Abstract A remote, motivational interviewing–informed intervention using self-administered point-of-care urine tenofovir testing improved long-term pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence among young U.S. men-who-have-sex-with-men in a pilot randomized trial. Participants increased hair tenofovir levels by one to two tablets weekly, with high feasibility and acceptability, supporting further implementation.
