Key Points

  • The aim is to clarify the misunderstood relationship between physical processes and subjective experience in consciousness.
  • Analysis of the Hard Problem of consciousness
  • Critique of presuppositions surrounding experience
  • Integration of concepts from thermodynamics and evolutionary biology
  • Examination of third-person descriptions of consciousness
  • Reconceptualizing experience eliminates the explanatory gap of the Hard Problem.
  • Experience is framed as internal control architecture in biological systems.
  • The findings suggest that the Hard Problem reflects intuitive misconceptions about consciousness.

Abstract

The Hard Problem of consciousness asks why physical processes give rise to subjective experience rather than occurring “in the dark.” This paper argues that the Hard Problem rests on a mistaken presupposition: that experience is something over and above the functional organisation of biological systems. Once experience is understood as the internal control architecture of self-maintaining systems operating under irreversible constraint, no further explanatory gap remains. The paper presents experience as a system-level regulatory phenomenon grounded in thermodynamics and evolutionary biology, and argues that the demand for explanation “beyond function” presupposes what it seeks to establish. What remains of the Hard Problem after this analysis is not an unresolved scientific mystery, but a reflection of powerful intuitions and the limits inherent in third-person description.
