Although parasites are usually linked to environmental or vector-borne transmission, several can spread through sexual contact, representing an under-recognised category of sexually transmitted infections. This session reviews key parasitic pathogens with documented sexual transmission, including Trichomonas vaginalis , Giardia duodenalis , Entamoeba histolytica , Cryptosporidium spp., Pthirus pubis and Sarcoptes scabiei . Their often subtle or non-specific presentations contribute to underdiagnosis, particularly in high-risk sexual networks. Increasing awareness, supported by improved molecular diagnostics, is essential to understand these pathways, refine risk assessment, and enhance prevention strategies.
