Following the successful Weather and Climate Birds of a Feather session at RSECon24, the Geoscience Special Interest Group (SIG) was formed, with over 100 RSEs signed up to our slack space. The geoscience RSE community consists of many RSEs working across the various fields of geoscience, spanning, among others, climate, weather, space science, geology and oceanography. In last year’s session, the needs and interests of this community were discussed. Those identified included a need for opportunities to share knowledge between organisations, break down silos and collaborate as well as interest in developing better guidance on career pathways. As the inaugural hybrid meeting of the newly formed Geoscience SIG, we propose a BoF event to address these interests, aiming to build this community by bringing together RSEs from across the fields to network and facilitate knowledge exchange. This session is open to any RSEs working in or interested in geoscience and will feature keynotes from Bryan Lawrence (NCAS) & Andrea Sharpe (NERC), lightning talks on technical topics from within the community, breakout sessions to discuss community-driven topics (such as careers and building domain knowledge) and a session on the next steps for the SIG.
