Abstract Background: This study explores the experiences, challenges and opportunities in promoting nutritious food in a medical college setting. Materials and Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using in-depth interviews with canteen owners in a medical college in Mumbai, India. Transcripts were analysed thematically using a predominantly inductive approach. The manuscript was prepared in accordance with the COREQ 32-item checklist. Results: Canteen owners recognised the need for healthier options but faced financial, logistical and institutional barriers. Customer preferences and affordability played a significant role in menu choices. Institutional decision-making influenced food availability, and canteen owners suggested strategies such as colour-coded menu labelling and periodic menu trials to encourage healthier eating. Conclusion: Institutional support, menu innovation and targeted interventions, such as pricing strategies and food labelling, enhance the availability and acceptance of nutritious options in canteens.
