This paper is to explore boundaries of humanity and artificial intelligence in Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? In the novel, the line between humans and android is heavily blurred, primarily through the concept of empathy and the novel’s exploration of artificial emotions. The androids, despite being artificial, can express complex emotions and even have a sense of empathy, challenging the notion that empathy is solely a human trait. Rick Deckard, the protagonist in the novel, starts to question the nature of empathy and whether it’s a reliable measure of humanity as he encounters androids who exhibit complex emotions and behaviors. A lonely character, John R. Isidore, displays a surprising amount of empathy, even for the androids that exploit him, further blurring the lines between human and android. This blurring of the lines challenges the notion of a clear distinction between human and artificial consciousness.
