This paper offers a systematic comparative analysis of the educational philosophies of Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) and Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899–1976). Both were towering Bengali intellectuals whose literary and social activism influenced education in Bengal and beyond. Tagore’s pedagogy emphasized holistic, aesthetic, and nature-linked learning implemented in Santiniketan and later Visva -Bharati; Nazrul’s thought foregrounded social justice, national awakening, secular humanism, and education as an instrument of emancipation. Using primary ideas from their writings and secondary scholarly interpretations, this paper contrasts their aims, curricula, pedagogical methods, role of the teacher, and socio-cultural orientation, and discusses relevance to contemporary educational reform. Key differences are traced to their life trajectories: Tagore’s cosmopolitan humanism and institution-building vs Nazrul’s activist, anti-oppressive humanism emerging from grassroots struggle. The paper concludes with implications for inclusive, creative, and socially-engaged education today.
