• We examined self/spouse agreement, similarity, and assumed similarity in personality. • Participants were 451 heterosexual Dutch couples. • Self/spouse agreement was high for all HEXACO factors. • Actual and assumed similarities were high for Honesty-Humility and Openness only. We examined self/spouse agreement, similarity, and assumed (i.e., perceived) similarity in personality between spouses, using self- and spouse reports of the HEXACO personality variables from 451 Dutch heterosexual married couples ( N = 902; mean age 55 years; mean relationship duration 28 years). Self/spouse agreement correlations averaged about 0.70 for the factor-level scales and about 0.60 for the facet-level scales. Consistent with previous studies, Honesty-Humility and Openness to Experience (and only these factors) showed moderately high actual similarity ( r s = 0.39 and 0.36, respectively) and assumed similarity ( r s = 0.57 and 0.41, respectively). We suggest that the self/spouse agreement and spouse similarity correlations obtained here approach the realistic upper-bound values.
