Use and regulation of patient-specific three-dimensional printing in medicine: a survey of physician end-users

RSRuth ShaylorYLYotam LiorJSJillian Shapiro

Key Points

  • This research aims to gather insights from physicians about the use of 3D printing in medicine and its regulation.
  • Conducted the largest survey of physicians using 3D printing technologies in clinical settings.
  • Collected data on physician opinions and experiences with 3D printing.
  • Analyzed responses to understand underrepresentation in regulatory discussions.
  • Highlighted diverse opinions of physicians practicing 3D printing.
  • Indicated a gap in representation of physician perspectives within regulatory bodies.
  • Revealed a need for developing new guidelines informed by physician feedback.

Abstract

The integration of 3D printing technologies into clinical practice will continue to grow. This paper presents the largest survey of physicians practicing 3D printing to date. Given the underrepresentation of this key demographic within regulatory bodies, the opinions and positions of physician respondents reported here should be considered in the development and application of new guidelines and regulations in the field.
