Key Points

  • The study aims to investigate how helium atoms are ionized in plasma formed during laser ablation.
  • Examined plasma generated from laser ablation of tantalum target.
  • Performed experiments at power densities below the breakdown threshold of liquid helium.
  • Analyzed the role of diatomic tetracation HeTa4+ in ionization processes.
  • Ionization of helium atoms was determined to occur via the decay of diatomic tetracation HeTa4+.
  • Plasma was formed under specific conditions of laser intensity and target material.
  • Findings indicate unique interactions between laser ablation and superfluid helium.

Abstract

Abstract—It has been determined that the ionization of helium atoms in plasma formed during laser ablation of a tantalum target, immersed in superfluid helium, at a laser power density below the breakdown threshold of liquid helium occurs through the decay of the diatomic tetracation HeTa4+.
