Theoretical Foundations of Conditional Cash Transfers on Primary School Dropout Rates in Sierra Leone: An Analytical Framework

BKBintumayor Kamara

Key Points

  • The analysis aims to understand how conditional cash transfers can reduce primary school dropout rates by incentivizing parental involvement.
  • Theoretical analysis of existing literature on education policy and economic development.
  • Construction of an analytical model based on identified mechanisms of CCTs.
  • Exploration of socio-economic context in Sierra Leone to assess applicability.
  • Identified key mechanisms by which CCTs improve educational participation.
  • Highlighted areas needing further empirical investigation related to CCT effectiveness.

Abstract

Conditional cash transfers (CCTs) are a policy mechanism designed to improve educational outcomes by incentivizing parents to keep their children in school. Theoretical analysis will be employed using existing literature on education policy, social incentives, and economic development to construct an analytical model. The theoretical framework elucidates the key mechanisms through which CCTs influence educational participation and highlights areas for further empirical investigation. Future research should focus on understanding the specific conditions under which CCTs are most effective in reducing dropout rates, particularly in Sierra Leone's unique socio-economic context.
