Key Points

  • The research aims to understand how temperature influences viral diversity in subantarctic ecosystems.
  • Conducted environmental assessments in subantarctic fjords
  • Analyzed viral community structure
  • Investigated temperature's effects on viral dynamics
  • Viral communities exhibited significant sensitivity to temperature changes
  • Alterations in viral diversity linked to shifts in microbial activity
  • Potential consequences highlighted for nutrient cycling and food web structures

Abstract

Together, our findings underscore the environmental sensitivity of viral communities in subpolar marine systems and highlight their vulnerability to climate-driven changes. Given the critical role of viruses in microbial turnover, nutrient cycling, and ecosystem resilience, shifts in their diversity and structure may have far-reaching consequences for biogeochemical fluxes and food web dynamics in the fjords of Chilean Patagonia.
